The story of the woman behind the scandalous Claudine novels (and later Gigi) that dazzled French society in the first half of the 20th Century. The film depicts her rise from country girl to darling of the Parisian demi-monde with her husband Henry ‘Willy’ Gauthier-Villars. A critic and author in his own right, he mentors and later betrays her, as her stories gain them fame and notoriety.

While a wonderful and gloriously rich film which also serves as hauntingly modern in subject, feminist and queer themes, this extraordinary woman's story has been told rather tamely.
