KISS ME, KATE

'Kiss Me, Kate' follows both a musical version of 'The Taming of Shrew' as well as the behind-the-scenes drama of putting on the show. Lilli Vanessi (legendary Broadway actor Stephanie J. Block), a stage legend is portraying Katharine, the Shrew, alongside her recently divorced husband, Fred Graham (Adrian Dunbar, 'The Snowman'), who plays Petruchio, the one who tames her in the show. However, when one of the cast members gets involved with the mafia, the show must go on - only with more hijinx.

This recording of 'Kiss Me, Kate' is an absolute delight, largely due to its modern set design and the absolutely captivating Stephanie J. Block. For me, this is just not a musical I really connected with, I think its enjoyment largely comes from being in the room. A lot of the show's comedy didn't translate to the screen as the musical is almost 80 years old and it does feel a little dated.

The success of this production is the new set design; the turntable is incredibly impressive. It's very cool to see an older musical get a fresh new look, and the filmed version is a real showcase of that set.

I always love any time a musical gets a pro-shot, and 'Kiss, Me Kate' is a fun show that's been impressively captured. Is it a show I would seek out if it was playing? Probably not, but it's a treat to watch a Broadway legend captured on film any day of the week.
