We all have dealbreakers in relationships. It could be poor hygiene, bad communication skills, they're horrible with money, or they don't like 'High School Musical'; we all have our breaking point. But what if right before your wedding to your perfect partner, you learnt something about them that changed the way you view them? 'The Drama' explores just that.
The film follows Emma (Zendaya, 'Challengers', 'Dune' series) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson, 'Mickey 17', 'The Batman') a week out from their wedding. They are the perfect couple; they are made for each other, and madly in love. A few days out from their special day, they are taste-testing the wedding menu with their friends, another couple, Mike (Mamoudou Athie, 'Kinds of Kindness', 'Elemental') and Rachel (Alana Haim, 'One Battle After Another', 'Licorice Pizza'). Before they got married, they shared a secret with one another they had never shared before, and suggest that Emma and Charlie do the same. While most of them share harmless pranks or accidents from their childhoods, Emma reveals something about herself that changes everything - not only for her future husband, but for her friends, and puts their future in jeopardy.
'The Drama' is juicy, just like the name suggests. It does take it to the extreme while perfectly pushing the boundaries, making for a great dark comedy. Its premise is perfectly twisted while still being laugh-out-loud hilarious. It's best to go in with as little information as possible, because getting to experience the film's twist uninformed with a crowd is truly what this cinematic experience is all about.
Zendaya and Pattinson are phenomenal - not only is their chemistry delicious when the film gets wild, but they also perfectly deliver all the crazy directions the story takes. This is a true dark comedy, and they stay in step with it on every level. The film keeps levelling up; it's like a train wreck you can't look away from in the most complementary way possible, and it's absolutely worth taking the ride.
It's best to go in with as little information as possible, because getting to experience the film's twist uninformed with a crowd is truly what this cinematic experience is all about.
'The Drama' delivers on the title and then some, with stellar performances from its leads and a plot where you just don't know which wild direction it's going to take you next. RSVP "yes" to the messiest and juiciest wedding of the year!
