SPEAK NO EVIL

DANISH FILM GETS AMERICANISED

THEATRICAL REVIEW

Hollywood loves a remake and none more so than foreign films. French film 'La Famille Bélier' became 'Coda', 'The Intouchables' became 'The Upside'The-Upside, Swedish film 'A Man Called Ove' become 'A Man Called Otto'. This is something that has been happening for years, but usually there is a little more time before a foreign film is adapted for Western audiences. Danish film 'Speak No Evil' was released in 2022 and only a mere two years later it's getting its U.S. remake.

'Speak No Evil' follows the Dalton family, Louise (Mackenzie Davis, 'Happiest Season','Terminator: Dark Fate', Ben (Scoot McNairy, 'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile', 'A Quiet Place Part II') and Agnes (Alix West Lefler, 'The Good Nurse') who, when on vacation, meet Paddy (James James-McAvoyMcAvoy, 'It Chapter 2', 'Split'), Ciara (Aisling-FranciosiAisling Franciosi, 'The Nightingale', 'Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter') and Ant (Dan Hough, debut). They are much more outgoing, and the two groups bond. When the Daltons arrive home, they get a request to go to Paddy's house for a weekend getaway - but when they arrive, Paddy's passive-aggressive behaviour starts to show itself and everything is not as it appears.

SWITCH: 'SPEAK NO EVIL' TRAILER 2

'Speak No Evil' plays a perfect dance of comedy and thrills, largely attributed to James McAvoy. He does a perfect job of making you laugh with him to causing you to be scared of him. The film does take a while to get to the horror elements, and if it got there faster it would have been a tighter film.

While I haven't seen the Danish film, you can tell the United States version is a tamer watch. While, from some brief research, both films hit similar beats, the real deviation is in the third act. The 2024 film chooses an uplifting route than the 2022 film, and that's going to divide fans of the Danish original. While it still gets across its message, the hard-hitting shock value ending is much more docile. Again, I haven't watched the original, but I found every moment from when the truth was revealed about Paddy to be quite suspenseful and I enjoyed watching it all unfold.

'Speak No Evil' works as a U.S. version of its Danish counterpart, even if it's missing some of the impact. McAvoy proves once again what a powerhouse he is in the horror genre. This is the perfect popcorn flick if suspenseful horrors are your thing.
