ROOFMAN

'Roofman' perfectly captures the bizarre story of Jeffrey Manchester, delivering on the comedy of this true story. What surprised me the most was the incredible heart the film has. Channing Tatum plays Jeffrey so lovingly that you truly understand where he is coming from with his crimes and fall for him. This is one of Tatum's best roles, and it was a delight to see him really transform and bring his all to this character. The film has a stacked supporting cast from Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn (2022's 'Cyrano', 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'), Peter Dinklage ('Wicked', 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes'), Uzo Aduba ('Lightyear', 'My Little Pony: The Movie'), Juno Temple ('Venom: The Last Dance', 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil') and LaKeith Stanfield ('Haunted Mansion', 'Judas and the Black Messiah'). While I wouldn't say they are wasted, it did feel odd at times having bigger-named actors in these smaller roles. At the same time, because they are established actors, all the small roles feel very fleshed out and add great character to this world.

My only gripe with the film is that it's set in the early 2000s and largely at a Toys "R" Us, so there are a lot of pop culture references relevant to that time period. However, there were two incidents where there were inaccuracies. We have a Disney Princess backpack that features Moana, a character that didn't exist until 2016, and there's one point where they are building LEGO 'Harry Potter', and it's one of the modern sets. Again, these are both very petty gripes; they were just noticeable to me because, for the most part, the film is very careful with its time period setting.

'Roofman' is a really excellent film based on a true story. It blends comedy and heart, and brings this wild true story to the big screen in an enjoyable and meaningful way. 'Roofman' is the perfect example of how to do these kinds of movies. In a cinematic landscape that frequently feels overrun with biopics, it really is a breath of fresh air and an absolute delight that will have you giggling while pulling at your heartstrings.
