In 2022, director Baz Luhrmann directed 'Elvis'. It's the first time the director has ever tackled a real-life figure. Ever project Luhrmann has taken on, from 'Strictly Ballroom' to 'Elvis', he has completely submerged himself in that world, and none more so than the life of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. During the process of making that film, Luhrmann was seeking out unseen and unused footage of Elvis, particularly from the 'Elvis: That's the Way It Is' documentary and 'Elvis on Tour', a concert film. These were found in the Warner Bros. salt mine film archives, however without any audio. Over the next two years, Luhrmann's team began cleaning up the footage and matching it to pre-existing audio until they finally found some unreleased audio of Presley talking about his life. Now, coupled with the concert footage, 'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert', a part-doco, part-concert film was born.
For the first time, 'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert' showcases never-before-seen footage from Presley's 1970s Las Vegas residency, along with with a never-before-heard recording of Elvis telling his side of the story, which come together to give the King of Rock the world tour he never had.
'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert' is a triumph of modern restoration. This footage from the 1970s looks like it was filmed yesterday. It's a truly phenomenal exhibition of the importance of restoration, and also the blueprint for how to do it. Elvis has never been showcased so authentically and with such humanity. This film was the first time I felt like I got to understand the man and see him as a person, not as a commodity. The dialogue we get to hear from him makes him feel so grounded and human.

For Elvis fans, this is truly like getting to go to the concert that you couldn't go to. For non-believers like me, this was the first time I understood why he was the King.
'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert' is a technical feat like no other. The seamless restoration efforts, matched with a charismatic talent, make this a historical documentary. It's also a testament to Luhrmann's dedication and passion for what he's making. Without the 'Elvis' film, this footage would never have seen the light of day. Even if you are not a Presley fan, no footage deserves to be buried, and I hope we get to see more unearthed gems from other musical talents that are no longer with us.
