SXSW Sydney has unveiled the headliners for its 2025 Screen Festival, and it's a line-up set to ignite the city this October. From twisted horror and searing drama to surreal comedy and musical legend, the program reflects the bold eclecticism that has become the festival's hallmark, promising a week of big-name talent and cinematic discovery.
First up is Yorgos Lanthimos' hotly anticipated 'Bugonia'. The Oscar-winning director reunites with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons for a gory black comedy about two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap a powerful CEO they believe to be an alien. With its pedigree cast and Lanthimos' singular vision, 'Bugonia' is shaping up as one of the year's most provocative premieres.
Scott Derrickson returns to the world of his breakout horror hit with 'Black Phone 2'. Ethan Hawke reprises his chilling role as the Grabber, with the story picking up four years after his original crimes. As Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams and disturbing visions about her family's past, the sequel looks to push the mythology of the franchise into even darker, more unsettling territory.
Also among the headliners is Lynne Ramsay's long-awaited 'Die My Love'. Adapted from Ariana Harwicz's acclaimed novel, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence as a young mother spiralling into madness, alongside Robert Pattinson and Nick Nolte. With Ramsay's track record for visceral, uncompromising filmmaking, 'Die My Love' could prove one of the festival's most powerful and challenging works.
Music and cult fandom collide in two of the festival's buzziest titles. Scott Cooper's opening night film 'Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere' casts Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, exploring the making of his haunting 1982 album 'Nebraska'. On the other end of the spectrum, 'Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie' brings the Canadian comedy duo of Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol to the big screen, throwing their hapless antics into a time-travel plot that's already primed for cult status.
