1821. Handsome poet Lucien is poor, but highly ambitious. Failing to make a name for himself in his provincial hometown, he naively follows his married patroness to the glamorous beau monde of Paris.

But Lucien has entered a society far more dangerous than he realised, and the venomous denizens of the salons conspire to keep him out of their ranks. Lucien is forced to abandon his principles and find work at a low-brow newspaper, where his scathing critiques soon cause a sensation and arouse the interest of admirers and publishers. But in a society where profit and status rule, what is really left for Lucien?

1921, The beginning of the Golden Twenties. Not far from Paris It is party day at Marguerite Dumont’s castle. Like every year, an array of music lovers gathers around a great cause at the owner’s place. Nobody knows much about this woman except that she is rich and that her whole life is devoted to her passion: music. Marguerite sings. She sings wholeheartedly, but she sings terribly out of tune. In ways quite similar to the Castafiore, Marguerite has been living her passion in her own bubble, and the hypocrite audience, always coming in for a good laugh, acts as if she was the diva she believes she is. When a young, provocative journalist decides to write a rave article on her latest performance, Marguerite starts to believe even further in her talent. This gives her the courage she needs to follow her dream. Despite her husband’s reluctance, and with the help of a has-been divo, both funny and mean, she decides to train for her first recital in front of a crowd of complete strangers.

Meanwhile, Jean's glamorous daughter Corinne is making waves as a rising movie star, hailed as the "French Greta Garbo".
By 1940, however, the Nazi invasion of Paris forces stark choices. Jean aligns with German authorities and, through his newspaper Les Nouveaux Temps, becomes a powerful press baron - embracing collaboration as a path to influence and survival. His trajectory intertwines with that of Otto's, now the Reich ambassador, whose support helps cement his position inside the occupiers' elite. Through her connection to the two, Corinne is drawn into an intoxicating yet perilous world of embassy parties, salons, and propaganda cinema that both protects and endangers her.
