When the free spirited Therese agrees to marry her neighbour Bernard Desqueyroux, it is more of a business deal with their two properties becoming one vast estate. Married life in 1920’s provincial France does not to agree with Therese who quickly finds herself stifled not only by the tedium of her surroundings but the intellectual mediocrity of her husband.

Her dreams of a life in Paris and the means to escape there look to become more of a reality when she decides to apply her poisonous outlook in literal terms, lacing her husband’s medicine with arsenic.
