Set over the long, hot summer that led up to the 2003 Canberra bushfires, the film follows Billie (Ashleigh Cummings from Tomorrow, When the War Began and hit TV show Puberty Blues) and her best friend Laura (Lily Sullivan who wowed audiences in Mental). Two impulsive teenage girls who live in the outskirts of Canberra, they dream of a life outside of the one they know. They share everything… including Laura’s boyfriend, Danny (Toby Wallace), who Billie has fallen crazy in love with. While Laura is working up the courage to lose her virginity to Danny, Billie has been sleeping with him behind her best friend’s back. Billie can’t believe that finally, someone loves her more than they love Laura – who is always the most popular person in the room. When Billie’s social-worker mum takes in Isaac (Aliki Matangi), a troubled kid trying to escape his past, the delicate balance of their lives is disrupted. The story of Lawrence, an 18 year old Chinese Australian who cheats in his high school final year exams and fails to get into Medicine. Banished to stay with his uncle for the summer, Lawrence meets the Professor, a colourful, ageing conman. And so begins a road-trip with the Professor and his daughter Sarah. The Professor teaches Lawrence the art of swindling and cheating, and from Sarah, Lawrence learns a hard lesson in unrequited love. As Lawrence and the Professor work towards their biggest scam, and Sarah and Lawrence plan a swindle of their own, Lawrence is forced to make a choice between love, life and lies.
