Bella Brown is a beautifully quirky young woman who dreams of writing and illustrating a successful children’s book. Despite her abandonment as a child, the all consuming OCD, the unfulfilled dream, her awful boss at the library and her paralysing fear of ora and fauna, Bella is down but not out. She has a spark, an edge, a talent and a voice that we can feel from the get go. This girl has a preternatural survival instinct, having been found in the middle of winter in the middle of Hyde Park as a babe. When Bella is forced by her landlord to deal with her neglected garden or face eviction, she meets her nemesis, match and mentor in Alfie Stephenson, a cantankerous, loveless, rich old man who lives next door and is an amazing horticulturalist.

In the 1990s, an impassioned and articulate American Professor, Deborah Lipstadt publishes a book, 'Denying The Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory'. Soon after, a prominent 'denier' referenced in Lipstadt's work, David Irving, sues her for defamation. Suddenly, under the rule of the English legal system, Lipstadt must prove that the Holocaust occurred in order to discredit Irving and clear her name. She is matched with a brilliant but eccentric barrister, Richard Rampton and the exceptionally smart lawyer Anthony Julius, who ask Deborah to buy into a unique and daring strategy - remain silent. Neither Deborah nor a single Holocaust survivor is to take the stand during their defense, thereby avoiding any possibility of emotional bias.

James Gralton is the only person to be ever deported from Ireland. Gralton was an Irish communist leader who took U.S. citizenship after emigrating there in 1909. However, he returned to Ireland and started a dance hall in Effrinagh, County Leitrim and used the venue to propagate his political views. This was opposed by the Catholic clergy and eventually led to a shooting. This led to Gralton being arrested and deported to the U.S. in 1933 by the government led by Éamon de Valera.
