2024, Brat Summer. Pop star Charli XCX released her sixth studio album. While Charli XCX had previously had commercial success with hits like 'Boom Clap' and 'I Love It', most of her success was within the queer community. In June 2024, Charli unleashed her album 'Brat' onto the world, which became her biggest album of all time, one of the biggest albums of 2024, and a cultural movement. The world was "bumping that" "365" as Brat summer reigned supreme as the hottest new aesthetic. "Brat" became the word of the year as the Apple Dance took over, and trashy and messy fashion was the look. But Brat summer had to end, which led Charli to create a mockumentary film about the feeling of moving on from the biggest moment in her career.
'The Moment' follows pop star Charli XCX (herself, 'The Angry Birds Movie', 'UglyDolls') as she is heading towards the end of her Brat era. She still has some dates left on her arena tour when her record label licenses the tour to Amazon for a concert film. The film is to be directed by Johannes Godwin (Alexander Skarsgård, 'Pillion', 'Godzilla vs. Kong'). His vision for the show is extremely different from Charli's and her team's, and he wants to make the show more cookie-cutter pop star. As her team battles Johannes' new vision for Brat, Charli is trying figure out how to end her gigantic Brat era - and if that's even what she wants.
'The Moment' is for Charli's fans. It's the perfect end to the Brat era, and it does so in a way that only Charli can. Instead of doing a typical documentary or concert film, Brat gets a mockumentary send-off that pokes fun at the music industry. The film does slightly struggle with the more serious undertones, particularly seeing Charli struggling to end the Brat era and if she will ever have success this big again, but it knows to lean into the comedy as much as possible. Again, this movie is not for the unconverted; if you're not a Charli XCX fan, then 'The Moment' is not the film to change that, but if you do love her, this is the perfect fun film for you.
Of course, the film is filled with fun cameos from Charli's friends from the Brat era, but the standout is Kylie Jenner. While brief, she is extremely funny, and while I'm not saying her acting is going to light the comedy world on fire, for 'The Moment' she comes in, understands the assignment and contributes one of the most memorable scenes to the film.
'The Moment' ends Charli XCX's gigantic Brat era in the perfect Brat way. It's made for her fans, and everything in this film is for them to enjoy. It has great British humour, and following the current concert movie trend, it provides its own unique twist on what a pop star film can be in a way that only Charli and the Brat era could achieve.
