We have been saying it for years, but comedies are still one of the biggest genres missing from the theatrical landscape. To laugh in a theatre full of people is one of life's greatest joys. A particular sub-genre missing is the mum comedy: a film you take her to see, she laughs out loud for 90 minutes, and then forgets she saw it. Well, the team behind 'Bad Moms' are back together to do just that - revive the mum comedy with 'Spa Weekend'.
The follows four lifelong friends, Jane (Leslie Mann, 'Blockers', 'How to Be Single'), a single mum trying to balance her job as a lawyer and motherhood and struggles to find time for herself; Sophie (Anna Faris, 'Scary Movie' franchise, 'Overboard'), who struggles with her assistant job as her boss is too needy, and Coco (Michelle Buteau, 'Marry Me', 'Happiest Season'), who's recently divorced and learning how to make shared custody with her kids work. Then there is Mel (Isla Fisher, 'Now You See Me' franchise, 'Dog Man') - she's the wild card of the group who has always been the rebellious one. For Jane's birthday, they decide to go on a spa weekend. Jane and Coco didn't want to invite Mel, but Sophie did, which means this relaxing weekend away is going to turn into an absolutely chaotic time.
'Spa Weekend' is a fun comedy that knows not to overstay its welcome. While the script isn't perfect, the casting team up of Mann, Faris, Buteau and Fisher inject enough fun into the film to make this a vacation worth joining.
The film is very generic; three of the four leads are single mums trying to balance work and raising kids, but it's not meant to be a deep character study. It's meant to be a fun night out for mums, and it delivers on that promise. While it might not reach the heights of other mum-comedies like 'Bad Moms', it's more than serviceable.

When 'Spa Weekend' makes you laugh, it's because of the dynamic team-up of Mann, Faris, Buteau and Fisher; outside of that, it's generic comedy that has some light belly laughs. This 'Spa Weekend' might not be a full-body massage, but it's the first appointment on the road to more mum-comedies back on the big screen!
