2022's 'M3GAN' was a surprise hit. What looked to be another cheap horror movie aimed a teen crowd won over the masses with its perfect blend of horror and comedy. It, of course, became a gay icon thanks to her iconic dance moves and performance of 'Titanium'. Two years later, she has returned (during Pride Month, of course) to give us the ultimate upgrade. The icon, the legend and the moment is back, divas!
'M3GAN 2.0' picks up two years after the events of the first film. Gemma (Allison Williams, 'Get Out', TV's 'Girls') is an advocate for the regulation of AI, even becoming an author. While she is actively inventing in the tech world with her colleagues, Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez, '80 for Brady', Disney+'s 'English Teacher') and Tess (Jen Van Epps, Disney+'s 'No Exit', 'Guns Akimbo'), she is doing so more ethically after her experience with M3GAN. Her focus instead is learning how to raise her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, 'Thunderbolts*', 'Doctor Sleep'), and the two are slowly forming a healthier relationship. Meanwhile, a new robot, AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno, 'Pacific Rim Uprising', 'The Spy Who Dumped Me'), has been built by the military but becomes self-aware, killing her creators, and as she grows stronger plans to take over the world. It's revealed that the technology used to create M3GAN (physical: Amie Donald, voice: Jenna Davis) was stolen to make AMELIA. It becomes clear the only way to defeat AMELIA is to bring the original diva back!
'M3GAN 2.0' throws a little too much at its audience. Where the first felt like it walked the line perfectly between its horror and comedy elements, here the horror is a distant afterthought. The film leans more into the action-comedy genre, which does sound like a treat with this character. However, it overloads the plot, making it feel like we don't spend much time with our new favourite killer doll. The film runs a tad too long, and it's a solid 40 minutes before we see our girl in her new form. Those campy moments we love are still here and very heightened from the first, but there is a little too much focus on, both the new robot and Gemma battling AI. A tighter film would have made M3GAN more prominent and overall a more satisfying sit.

'M3GAN 2.0' does deliver when it comes to the titular doll; her upgrade to camp icon is perfect, and every time she was on screen, I was having truly the best Pride Month treat possible. However, this time, the plot around our girl is weaker, with it just being a little too dense while also making the diva we came to see missing from large stretches. 'M3GAN' hunty, shante you stay! Now, plot, you played it safe this time around; however, you need to step it up, or you'll be lip syncing next time!
