Audiences right now are spoiled for choice. High-budget productions are no longer limited to the theatrical space, with streaming shows and films pulling big names and even bigger budgets. The comedy genre has really suffered in recent years, with fewer and fewer being relegated to cinema. For better or worse, 'Bride Hard' made it to the big screen, but is it worthy of its theatrical release?
The film follows Sam (Rebel Wilson, 'Cats', 'Jojo Rabbit'), Maid of Honour to her childhood best friend, Betsy (Anna Camp, 'Pitch Perfect', 'The Help'). However, as the two grew up, they became distant because Sam is a secret agent. After relocating her friend's bachelorette to Paris because she is on assignment, she ends up leaving the party because of work. This furthers tension between not only these childhood friends but Betsy's entire Bridal party, Virginia (Anna Chlumsky, 'My Girl', TV's 'Veep'), Lydia (Da'Vine Joy Randolph, 'The Holdovers', 'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish') and Zoe (Gigi Zumbado, 'Heart Eyes'). Now it's the wedding day, and with Sam and Betsy estranged, they keep their distance - but when the wedding turns into a hostage situation, Sam is the only one who can save them.
'Bride Hard' is simply unfunny; there is nothing to really latch on to. The film is so lazily shot, and none of the cast really wants to be there, leaving it as such an empty shell. I have been subjected to much more painful sits, but 'Bride Hard' leaves no impact.
What baffles me most is that this cast can act and be funny, but here it seems they've forgotten that's something they can do. Every scene feels like they were told the line right before they hit record. Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Anna Chlumsky are the only ones who get out of this unscathed, but the film is also completely uninterested in showcasing them.

The film also wants to be this big part-violent/part-raunchy action-comedy while also having an emotional core, but it can't pull off either tone. The action scenes have bad choreography and terribly noticeable stunt doubles, and the emotional or serious scenes border on parody with how sappy they are. I do think it would have worked better if the focus were more on the wedding/hostage angle and the "hilarity" from that; it throws a lot at what should be a simple pitch and fails at everything.
'Bride Hard' is such an empty watch. It's not so bad, it's good - it's just there. These are pictures to fill the screen so that audiences can sit in silence. It offers nothing, and somehow gives even less.
