‘Into the Storm’ isn’t the type of movie you pay good money to see because of its plot, characters, name actors, decent script or unbelievable CGI - because, quite frankly, it has none of those things. It’s the type of movie you see because you’ve found a surprise $20 in your pocket and you're bored... and there’s nothing on TV... or the internet... and your room is clean.
In the spirit of ‘Chronicle’ and so many that came before it, ‘Into the Storm’ is a found footage film. The events are captured by a storm-chasing documentary crew and two teenage brothers, one recording his school's graduation, the other helping his crush with video project, all of them caught in the middle of the biggest cluster of storm cells the world has ever seen. There are a few loose relationship dynamics thrown into the mix, but they aren’t given any proper screen time to capture your interest or tug those heart-strings when things go awry or ultimately get resolved with a group hug.
SWITCH: 'INTO THE STORM' TRAILER 2
The only reason this movie is playing in cinemas and not billed as a double feature along side ‘Sharknado’ on the SyFy channel is quite simply budget - ‘Into the Storm’ had one, ‘Sharknado’ didn’t.
Between the appalling script, terrible acting by no-names and no one worth mentioning, not to mention the disengaging story and sub-par visual effects, there’s really nothing here. Stick with ‘Twister’. It may be 18 years old, but it got it right.
When you see ‘Into the Storm’ billed as a “disaster” film... oh, it’s a disaster all right.
